A special workshop on the "Arunodora" National Reading Promotion and Library Development Program, aimed at fostering attitudinal and behavioral changes among children as priority citizens under the ethical pillar of the "Clean Sri Lanka" national program, was held at the Presidentcial Secretariat on 12th January 2026. The primary objective was to cultivate reading habits among the current young generation and develop their attitudes by utilizing literature and art. Plans include developing library infrastructure at the provincial level, conducting reading camps at the district level, and publishing a series of books in 2026 that promote societal ethical values.
Under this project, financial provisions have been allocated from the "Clean Sri Lanka" 2026 budget to upgrade infrastructure in schools and public libraries with limited facilities. Going beyond mere building renovations, a distinctive feature is equipping libraries with digital resources such as e-books and audiobooks. Prioritizing rural and plantation areas, the government's expectation through this initiative is to nurture a generation of disciplined and humanitarian citizens.
National Library and Documentation Services Board Chairman, veteran lyricist Mr. Rathna Sri Wijesinghe, Senior Additional Secretary to the President (Finance and Economic Affairs) Mr. Russell de Aponso, and Additional Secretary to the President (Clean Sri Lanka) Eng. S.P.C. Sugeeshwara, along with a group of officials, participated in this occasion.
