In line with the National Program for Finding Sustainable Solutions to the Human–Elephant Conflict, another successful step was taken under the “Thabbowa Again for Elephants” initiative, by conducting a special attitude development program on October 12, 2025, for 135 electric fence assistants in Thabbowa area.
This program, organized with the vision of realizing the national initiative “Beyond the Electric Fence – Towards a Sustainable Solution,” was conducted by Mr. Dulip Somirathna, Director (Social) of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat.
Expressing his views on the occasion, Mr. Somirathna emphasized that maintaining electric fences is not merely a technical task but also a social responsibility that must be carried out with an understanding of both elephant behavior and the mindset of rural communities. He further stated, “The attitudinal development of electric fence assistants directly contributes to enhancing the effectiveness of their duties and minimizing the human–elephant conflict.”
Through this program, participants gained a broader understanding of several areas, including new knowledge related to their duties, conflict management, and community coordination.
The “Thabbowa Again for Elephants” program aims to continuously implement such practical activities to safeguard the natural habitats of wild elephants while ensuring the safety of lives and property of the people in the region.
