Welcome to Clean Sri Lanka

Blue Flag Beach Programme Launched Under Clean Sri Lanka Initiative at Thalalla Beach

The Blue Flag Beach Programme, a prestigious global eco-label initiative, officially commenced under the Clean Sri Lanka Initiative on 27th September 2025 at Thalalla Beach in Matara.

This programme aims to elevate the environmental, safety, educational, and accessibility standards of Sri Lanka's beaches, aligning with the internationally recognized Blue Flag criteria. The initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable coastal management and promoting eco-tourism in the country.

Thalalla Beach, renowned for its natural beauty and biodiversity, was selected as one of the first beaches to undergo this transformation under the programme. The comprehensive development efforts include improving waste management, preserving marine life habitats, enhancing visitor safety, and creating environmental awareness among both locals and tourists.

The Blue Flag certification, awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in Denmark, is recognized globally for ensuring beaches meet stringent environmental and educational standards. Sri Lanka’s adoption of this programme underscores its commitment to protecting its coastal ecosystems while boosting its tourism potential.

The launch at Thalalla Beach was attended by officials from Clean Sri Lanka Sectretariat, Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), the Ministry of Tourism and Land, local government representatives, and community stakeholders dedicated to preserving Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.

This programme is expected to serve as a model for other coastal regions in Sri Lanka, contributing to cleaner, safer, and more sustainable beaches that attract eco-conscious visitors from around the world.
