Clean Sri Lanka Launches "Beyond Recovery" for Cyclone Ditwa Victims in Badulla

Ditwah Badulla TOT

In a compassionate response to the devastation wrought by the "Ditwa" cyclone, the Clean Sri Lanka National Programme has rolled out its "Beyond Recovery" initiative, targeting mental well-being support for affected communities in Badulla District.

A landmark two-day residential training program kicked off on January 16, 2026, at the Pelgahatenna Uva Management Center, empowering district-level government officers as mental health promoters. Tailored for Badulla's Government officials, the workshop drew 105 participants, fostering skills to aid cyclone impacted families in relief centers.

Directors from the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat and senior figures from the Badulla District Secretariat including the District Secretary Mr. Prabath Abeywardhana graced the opening, underscoring the program's alignment with national recovery efforts. Expert-led sessions featured psychiatrists, therapists, community officers, and artists delivering lectures alongside hands-on activities for holistic psychosocial support.

The core aim of the initiative was to arm officers with precise knowledge and practical tools to address trauma across age groups—children under 12, youth aged 12-18, and adults over 18, ensuring sustained mental health interventions in shelters and beyond.

"Beyond Recovery" extends Clean Sri Lanka's Social, Ethical and Environmental pillars into disaster resilience, blending social engagement with governance for vulnerable populations. Trained facilitators will now cascade activities like counseling circles, art therapy, and age specific resilience workshops, promoting healing amid ongoing rebuilding.

This rollout marks a proactive step in Sri Lanka's 2026 disaster response, with plans for district-wide expansion.
