Clean Sri Lanka Launches Pilot Project with New Accessible Buses for Persons with Special Needs.

Busses to the people with Special Needs

In a significant step toward inclusive public transportation, the Clean Sri Lanka national programme has greenlit a pilot initiative featuring 10 state of the art, low-floor, air conditioned buses designed for persons with special needs.

Under the programme's allocated provisions, authorities have decided to deploy these specialized buses as a tpilot service. Procurement for the vehicles is completed, and expected delivery by March 15, 2026. The buses prioritize accessibility, comfort, and modern amenities to enhance mobility for underserved communities.

The Sri Lanka Transport Board currently lacks the required physical and digital infrastructure to operate and maintain these advanced vehicles. To address this gap, the government is leveraging a broader modernization effort.

Aligning with a July 21, 2025, Cabinet decision to roll out 100 high-tech buses in Colombo's urban areas, the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development proposed handing over the 10 pilot buses to Lanka Metro Transit (Private) Limited  established under the Sri Lanka Transport Board. The Cabinet has fully approved this move, positioning Lanka Metro Transit (Pvt) Ltd to handle all operations.

This pilot marks an initial stride in upgrading Sri Lanka's bus network, promoting equity and efficiency in urban travel while advancing the Clean Sri Lanka programme's goals.
