Colombo Central Bus Stand Renovation Accelerates for Festive Rush Under Clean Sri Lanka Initiative

Colombo Central Bus Stand Renovation

Renovation work at the Colombo Central Bus Stand is advancing swiftly, aiming to deliver modern facilities and enhanced comfort for passengers traveling home during the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year season. Funded at Rs. 450 million under the "Clean Sri Lanka" national programme, the project benefits from direct labor contributions by the Sri Lanka Air Force.

A key progress review meeting on February 12 at the Presidential Secretariat addressed timelines, potential hurdles, and immediate solutions to ensure a timely public opening. Chaired by Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena and Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayaka, the discussion included Parliamentarians Dr. Najith Indika and Attorney Lakmali Hemachandra, alongside Colombo Mayor Mrs. Vraie Cally Balthazaar.

Senior representatives from multiple sectors attended to drive the project's success. Defense Ministry officials, including Secretary Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sampath Thuyacontha  and Air Force Commander Air Marshal W.B. Edirisinghe, joined other Air Force officers, Special Task Force, and Sri Lanka Police leaders. Transport and infrastructure delegates came from the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Sri Lanka Railways, Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), and Road Development Authority (RDA). Urban planning experts from the Colombo Municipal Council and Urban Development Authority (UDA) participated, as did utility providers such as Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), Digital Economy Ministry officials, and NIO Engineering consultants.

The initiative underscores the government's commitment to efficient, passenger-friendly services, transforming the bus stand with a refreshed design and cutting-edge amenities ahead of the festive period.
