Welcome to Clean Sri Lanka

“Deduru Naya” Angling Tournament successfully concluded on 20th September

The "Deduru Naya" Angling Tournament was successfully concluded on 20th September at the Naatiya Bridge on the Deduru Oya Reservoir. The tournament, held from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM, was jointly organized by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, National Aquaculture Development Authority, Ministry of Fisheries - North Western Province, Angling Prajiva Sports Fishing Club, Fishing Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd, and Eleora Fishing Tackles.

The event focused on addressing the ecological threat posed by the invasive Snakehead fish, which endangers the native fish population in the Deduru Oya. Anglers from local communities actively participated, aiming to remove this invasive species to protect the biodiversity of the reservoir.

This tournament not only provided a platform for friendly competition but also served a vital environmental purpose by promoting sustainable fishery management practices. The organizers stressed the importance of such initiatives in preserving aquatic ecosystems for future generations.

The success of the event was marked by enthusiastic participation and community support, reflecting growing awareness of ecological conservation challenges. The collaborative effort exemplifies how sport fishing can be harnessed as a positive force in environmental protection endeavors.

Local anglers and residents are encouraged to continue their support for such conservation activities to maintain the ecological balance and protect Sri Lanka’s natural water bodies.
