“Deduru Naya” Angling Tournament Targets Invasive Snakehead Threat at Deduru Oya Reservoir

The "Deduru Naya - The Snakehead" Angling Tournament is scheduled for September 20th from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Naatiya Bridge on the Deduru Oya Reservoir. This event focuses on addressing the ecological threat posed by the Snakehead fish, an invasive species that endangers the native fish populations of Deduru Oya.

The Event is organized collaboratively by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, National Aquaculture Development Authority, Ministry of Fisheries - North Western Province, Angling Prajiva Sports Fishing Club, Fishing Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd, and Eleora Fishing Tackles. The tournament aims to encourage the removal of this invasive species to protect the reservoir’s biodiversity.

The Snakehead is known for its aggressive behavior and rapid reproduction, which disrupts the natural balance by outcompeting and preying on indigenous fish species. This angling event provides an opportunity for fishermen and anglers to actively participate in controlling the Snakehead population while raising awareness about the importance of preserving native aquatic life.

Organizers highlight that the tournament not only promotes sport fishing but also serves a crucial environmental purpose. The collaborative effort seeks to support sustainable fishery management and protect the ecological integrity of the Deduru Oya Reservoir for future generations.

Local anglers and community members are encouraged to join the tournament and contribute to this important conservation effort through responsible fishing practices.
