Due to decades of neglect without repairs and upgrades, the access roads, bus bays, passenger waiting areas, driver and conductor restrooms, administrative buildings, sanitation, and drainage systems at the Pettah Central Bus Stand have deteriorated to very poor conditions. This situation has caused severe inconvenience to the passengers using the Pettah Central Bus Stand, as well as to the drivers, conductors, and operational staff.
Therefore, the renovation and development of the Pettah Central Bus Stand to meet current standards has been identified as an urgent necessity. The estimated cost for these renovations and developments is approximately 425 million Sri Lankan Rupees.
Accordingly, utilizing the provisions allocated under the 'Clean Sri Lanka' program, along with the direct labor contribution of the Sri Lanka Air Force and the cooperation and support of relevant institutions including the Colombo Municipal Council, Ceylon Electricity Board, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Road Development Authority, and Urban Development Authority, the proposal presented by the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation for the renovation and development of the Pettah Central Bus Stand was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
