“Dream Destination” Programme Marks New Milestone with Kandy Railway Station Renovation

Kandy Railway Station

The railway service, a vital component of Sri Lanka’s public transportation network, is undergoing transformative development under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative to become faster, more reliable, and comfortable for commuters. As part of this effort, the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Railways Department, is successfully implementing the “Dream Destination” railway station renovation programme.

On October 1, 2025, the programme reached a significant milestone with the official launch of the renovation work at the Kandy Railway Station. The event was graced by the presence of key dignitaries including the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Mr. Bimal Rathnayake; Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena; Member of Parliament Hon. Thanura Dissanayake; the Governor of Central Province; and the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Kandy. Senior officials from the Central Provincial Chief Secretary, District Secretariat, Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, and Sri Lanka Railways Department were also in attendance.

Maga Engineering (Pvt) Ltd, the principal sponsor of the project, was represented at the occasion by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Piyadasa Madhurasinha, along with other executives.

This new phase follows prior station upgrades already underway at Thalpe, Maradana, and Narahenpita railway stations under the “Dream Destination” programme. The comprehensive renovation programme aims to modernize 100 railway stations nationwide, creating cleaner, safer, and more passenger-friendly environments. These improvements are expected to significantly elevate the travel experience across Sri Lanka’s railway network.

Through this public-private partnership initiative, with strong government commitment and private sector collaboration, the “Dream Destination” programme is laying the foundation for a modern and sustainable public transport infrastructure that serves the needs of all commuters.
