Under the "Clean Sri Lanka" national program, an agreement was signed on December 19, 2025, to procure 20 modern waste compactor vehicles for selected local government authorities, ushering solid waste management systems in Sri Lanka into a new era. At the ceremony held at the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, the Secretary to the Ministry and officials from Solex exchanged tender agreements formally.
Implemented in line with budget proposals presented for the 2025 financial year, this project extends beyond mere vehicle acquisition. Its primary objective is to reduce the volume of waste transported to landfills by 30% within the next three years through enhanced transportation efficiency. The government anticipates that environment friendly waste collection and transportation will ensure both ecological and social sustainability.
Approval from the National Prlanning Department was granted on May 9, 2025, followed by Cabinet approval on May 28, 2025. Per the agreement signed on December 19, 2025, these 20 vehicles are scheduled for distribution to selected local authorities across the island by the second quarter of 2026. Authorities express confidence that this will provide a sustainable solution to the current vehicle shortage in transporting waste to urban disposal sites.
The project emphasizes the need for a shift in public attitudes alongside technological advancements. It plans to promote the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) among the public to overcome challenges such as Waste segregation and mixed waste submission. Empowering local authorities prioritizes proper management of polythene, glass, and other waste materials.
Officials from the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, the Director of the National Solid Waste Management Centre, and several senior ministry officials attended the event. Special contractual provisions for vehicle maintenance ensure the project's long term viability.
