Rs. 425 Million Project to Renovate Colombo Central Bus Stand Launched Under Clean Sri Lanka Programme

The long-awaited renovation of the Colombo Central Bus Stand officially begins on September 15, 2025, with a project cost of Rs. 425 million under the government’s Clean Sri Lanka programme. The initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, with strong support from the Sri Lanka Air Force.

The Colombo Central Bus Stand, a vital transport hub serving thousands of commuters daily, has suffered from decades of neglect, resulting in deteriorated infrastructure and inadequate passenger facilities. The project aims to upgrade the bus stand’s infrastructure, including improvements to the access roads, bus bays, passenger waiting areas, restrooms for drivers and conductors, administrative buildings, drainage, and sanitation systems.

The renovation will be carried out by the Sri Lanka Air Force with collaboration from key government bodies, including the Colombo Municipal Council, Ceylon Electricity Board, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Road Development Authority, and Urban Development Authority.

Additionally, the renovation of the Pettah Central Bus Stand, built in 1964, is also set to commence today under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. After six decades of service, the Rs. 425 million project will include installation of new restrooms, information and communication centers, upgraded security systems, and several other modern facilities. The work will also be carried out by the Sri Lanka Air Force, reports Ada Derana.

Meanwhile, renovation work at the historic Maradana Railway Station in Colombo will start today as part of the ‘Dream Destination’ program under the Clean Sri Lanka Project. Officials emphasized that renovations will preserve the station’s historical and architectural significance during the process.

These initiatives mark a major step in the government’s commitment to modernizing the nation’s transport infrastructure while preserving cultural heritage under the visionary leadership of His Excellency the President.
