On 6th November 2025, a special meeting was held at the “Chartered” building of the Presidential Secretariat to discuss plans to implement a special project under the "Clean Sri Lanka" programme. The project aims to protect the sensitive environmental system of the "Sri Pada" area in line with the pilgrimage season, with a particular focus on the health and safety of pilgrims.
The number of pilgrims visiting "Sri Padaya" continues to increase annually, leading to a rise in non biodegradable waste accumulating within the "Sri Pada" sanctuary. The meeting emphasized the urgent need for effective solutions to address this environmental challenge. Discussions also included enhancing food safety and improving sanitary facilities for visitors.
Representatives from the Ministries of Defence, Public Administration, Environment, Religious Affairs, and Public Security participated, along with officials from the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils, District Secretariats of Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya, the Department of Wildlife Conservation, and the Central Environmental Authority.
The meeting was chaired by Engineer S.P.C. Sugishwara, Additional Secretary to the President, representing the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat. Directors responsible for social, environmental, media, coordination, and information technology portfolios also took part in the discussions.
This meeting lays the foundation for safeguarding the unique natural environment of the "Sri Pada" area while ensuring the well being of pilgrims during peak seasons, aligning conservation efforts with public health and safety measures.
