A new Material Recovery Facility worth 33 million rupees has been initiated in Wariyapola under the Clean Sri Lanka national program, marking a significant step forward in the country's organized waste management efforts.
Construction began on October 10 for the facility, which will be built on land owned by the Wariyapola Pradeshiya Sabha. The project aims to systematically collect and segregate non-biodegradable waste—including plastics, polythene, and other recyclable materials for recycling purposes.
This initiative is jointly funded from the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat and the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government. It targets sustainable waste management solutions nationally, focusing on reducing landfill waste, promoting recycling, fostering a circular economy, and minimizing environmental pollution.
In addition to environmental benefits, the facility is expected to create new green jobs for local residents, contributing to socio economic development in the area.
As part of a broader plan to establish 58 material recovery facilities Islandwide, four such centers are scheduled for launch this year. The first began operations recently in the Katthankudi area of Batticaloa district. Alongside Wariyapola, two more centers are planned for the Thalawa and Tangalle regions.
The opening ceremony included the participation of Deputy Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government Hon. Ruwan Senarath, Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Kurunegala District Coordination Committee Hon. Sujeewa Disanayaka, Chairman of Wariyapola Pradeshiya Sabha Hon. G.J.S. Kumarasingha, and senior officials of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat including Mr. Anjula Premaratne, Director (Environment), and Mr. Isuru Anuradha, Director (Information Technology).
